Frank moved to Miami and founded Crippen Oldsmobile, serving as its President from 1965 to 1994. He purchased Starnamen Oldsmobile in Lansing in 1973 which remains in the family as Crippen Auto Mall in its 35th year. Frank was the winner of numerous General Motors sales and service awards. Frank was very involved in his children's' schools and activities, but always had time to fundraise for church and community. He served on the Board of Trustees of Barry College (now Barry University) for 25 years, was President of the Bal Harbour Club, and active member of the Rotary Club of Miami Shores, the Committee of 100, and the 200 Club. In recognition of faithful and outstanding service to his church and community, Frank was invited and installed as a Knight of the Order of Malta in 1991, a worldwide lay, religious order of the Roman Catholic Church which promotes sanctification through work with the sick and the poor. He was Area Chairman, for the South Florida Chapter of the Order of Malta from 1999 until 2007, and was instrumental in developing and growing the Chapter. He was nationally recognized for his service as Chairman and received the Malta Award. Frank was Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and for over thirty years, a Board member of the Marian Center, a non- profit private school for children and adults with developmental disabilities. He served on the Board of Directors Catholic Health Services, and received its Achievement Award. Frank loved singing, boating, raising Arabian horses, harvesting blueberries and working on his Ciera Arabian Farm in Boone, North Carolina, and traveling the world with his family. There was always an open door, food on the bar-b-que with close friends and family to share the fun and enjoy each day, as Frank lived life to the fullest. The driving force of the Crippen Family, and a distinguished business man, Frank was loved by all. Wonderfully generous with family, friends, church and community, Frank Crippen has raised the bar for selfless giving and it is a mark for all of us to strive for. Frank never asked for himself, and everyone he met has been touched by his grace, his friendship, silent and inspiring leadership, and his love of life and people. Frank woke up the city and never slept. Without asking or volunteering, Frank was king of the hill, head o f the list, cream of the crop, at top of the heap. We can only imagine the reception Frank is receiving from our Lord and all who dwell in His heaven. It's so nice to have you back where you belong; You're lookin' swell, Frank,We can tell, Frank; You're still glowin', you're still crowin'; you're still goin' strong. Frank, we will miss you here but know you are serving God and carrying on with your generous giving and love for all. Funeral Services were held. Miami Oldsmobile dealership owner worked with area charities

For more than 30 years Frank Crippen sold what he deemed a small slice of the American dream from a lot along Northeast 123rd Street in North Miami. As owner of Crippen Oldsmobile, the New York native sold shiny new cars to locals and along the way carved a name for his charitable works with local Catholic groups. Crippen, who once appeared in television commercials alongside other local Oldsmobile dealers under the slogan ''five young men with the Olds idea,'' died of a stroke Friday. He was 79.

In 1965, Crippen moved his family from Lansing, Mich., where he was the General Sales Manager of an Oldsmobile dealership to Miami to open his own car dealership.

''He started out as car salesman in Rochester, New York and moved his way up,'' said his daughter, Sharon Crippen-Ginsburg of Miami. ``He came from a working class background, and was a classic example of a self-made man.''

Throughout his time in Miami-Dade, Crippen remained active in several prominent organizations and clubs -- including serving on the Board of Trustees for Barry University for nearly 25 years. The Coral Gables resident also formerly served as president of the Bal Harbour Club, and was a member of the Rotary Club of Miami Shores.

In 1991, he was installed as a Knight of the Order of Malta, a religious order of the Roman Catholic Church that promotes work with the sick and the poor. He also worked as a board member for the Marian Center, a nonprofit private school for children and adults with developmental disabilities.

Crippen is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy Summers Crippen, sons Jeff and James Crippen, and daughters Deborah Caruso and Sharon Crippen-Ginsburg, along with thirteen grand children and two great grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Monday at St. Louis Catholic Church, 7270 SW 120th Street, in Pinecrest. The family requests that memorial donations be made to either or both the Marian Center School and Services, 15701 NW 37th Avenue, Miami Gardens, FL 33054 or the Order of Malta -- South Florida, 16401 NW 37 Avenue, Miami Gardens, FL 33054, Attn: Mark J. Wolf.
